Surviving the Deep Freeze: How to Cope with Extreme Cold and Winter Storms

Winter storms and extreme cold can be dangerous, but with the right preparation and habits you can stay safe and warm. Here’s a straightforward guide.

Prepare Your Home

Stock up early on essentials: at least three days of non-perishable food, water (one gallon per person per day), medications, batteries, flashlights, and extra blankets. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Seal drafts around windows and doors. Insulate pipes to prevent freezing, and keep cabinets under sinks open to let warm air circulate. If you use a space heater or fireplace, ensure proper ventilation—never run generators indoors.Dress in LayersLayer properly to trap heat:

  • Moisture-wicking base layer (avoid cotton)

  • Insulating mid-layer (fleece or wool)

  • Windproof, water-resistant outer layer

Wear a hat, scarf, mittens (better than gloves for trapping heat), thick socks, and waterproof boots. Cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite, and limit time outside.

During the Storm

Stay indoors if possible. Close off unused rooms and focus on keeping one area warm with blankets. If the power goes out, use flashlights instead of candles and never use grills or stoves for heat. Watch for signs of hypothermia (shivering, confusion, slurred speech) or frostbite (numbness, pale or waxy skin). If you must go out, cover your mouth with a scarf to warm the air you breathe.

If stranded in a car: stay inside, run the engine for short periods with a window cracked, and tie a bright cloth to the antenna for visibility.

After the Storm

Clear snow from vents and roofs carefully to avoid injury. Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those living alone. Drive cautiously once roads are open—black ice can linger. Preparation and caution are your best defenses. Stay warm and stay safe.
